MicCom CEO Adubi Forges Strategic Ties with OAU and UI
In a landmark move to drive innovation and talent development in Nigeria’s engineering sector, the Chief Executive Officer of MicCom Cables and Wires, Mrs. Bukola Adubi, has established a groundbreaking partnership with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, Osun State, and the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State. This initiative is part of MicCom’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and industry-academia collaboration.
The partnership introduces a range of initiatives designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry application. These include research grants for students and faculty in the engineering departments of both universities, internship opportunities, industry-led workshops, and technical seminars. Additionally, MicCom has endowed awards for the best graduating students and is offering high-performing graduates potential job placements, reinforcing its dedication to nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of engineers.
Strengthening Academia-Industry Synergy
Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Mrs. Adubi, who also serves as the President of the Cable Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CAMAN), emphasized MicCom’s corporate philosophy of giving back to society and fostering long-term industry growth.
“I hope and pray that this partnership yields immense value for all stakeholders and stands the test of time,” Adubi stated.
With over a decade of experience navigating Nigeria’s cable manufacturing industry, Adubi has observed a growing disconnect between theoretical knowledge and practical application among engineering graduates. This realization spurred MicCom’s commitment to actively support educational institutions.
“Earlier this year, we at MicCom began exploring ways the company could contribute meaningfully to the engineering profession. We noticed that while graduates excel in theoretical interviews, they often struggle with practical industry-related challenges. This gap between academia and industry must be addressed.
“So, we’ve built it into our strategic plan, making it our CSR focus for the year. Not just for this year, we’ll continue with this into the foreseeable future,” she added.
Beyond bridging the academia-industry divide, Adubi is also a strong advocate for STEM education among young girls, aiming to increase female representation in Nigeria’s engineering and technology sectors.
University Leaders Welcome the Initiative
Obafemi Awolowo University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, hailed the collaboration as a transformative opportunity for students and faculty alike.
“We are pleased to embrace this collaboration with MicCom. Initiatives like this will not only stimulate creativity and innovation among our students but also provide a broad-based learning platform that strengthens national self-sufficiency in engineering and technological sustainability. The invaluable opportunities outlined necessitate the immediate commencement of this partnership,” Prof. Bamire remarked.
Similarly, Prof. P.O. Olapegba, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration (DVC Admin) at the University of Ibadan, described the partnership as a perfect alignment between academic excellence and industrial expertise.
“We sincerely appreciate MicCom’s interest in collaborating with the University of Ibadan. We are delighted to accept this opportunity. The synergy between MicCom’s technical expertise in cable and wire manufacturing and the University of Ibadan’s legacy of academic excellence will create remarkable value for students, faculty, and the broader industry.
“We are particularly excited about the prospects of industrial training and internships for our students, which will undoubtedly drive technological advancements essential for national development. We look forward to working closely with your team to achieve these shared goals,” he added.
MicCom’s Expansion into High-Voltage Cable Production
In addition to fostering academic partnerships, MicCom is positioning itself for a new phase of growth with its recent expansion into high-voltage (HV) cable production. This strategic move is expected to bolster Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and cement MicCom’s status as a dominant player in Africa’s cable and wire industry.
Founded in 1978, MicCom holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first indigenous cable manufacturing company. It is also the only one with the prestigious triple ISO certification:
- ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System),
- ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System), and
- ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System).
Over the years, MicCom has built a stellar reputation for producing high-quality cables and wires, serving both domestic and international markets while maintaining a strong presence across West Africa.
