MEMAN Advocates for Electric Vehicles and Local Refining to Secure Nigeria’s Energy Future

The Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) has emphasized the need for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and increased local refining to secure Nigeria’s energy future. These were the focal points of MEMAN’s quarterly webinar, which centered on energy diversity, EVs, and refining capabilities.

MEMAN reiterated its commitment to advancing the energy sector while serving the best interests of Nigerian consumers. The association’s mission aligns with the Federal Government’s National Petroleum Policy 2017 and the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, both of which emphasize energy accessibility and sustainability.

The forum underscored the critical role of electric vehicles in addressing climate change, reducing emissions, and improving energy security. Different types of EVs—including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)—were discussed for their potential in transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape. Although challenges such as high costs and limited charging infrastructure remain, ongoing innovations in solid-state batteries, wireless charging, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology are expected to facilitate EV adoption.

MEMAN also advocated for a diverse energy mix, combining traditional fuels, renewable energy, and emerging technologies. The association recommended the formation of petroleum industry consultative committees to resolve conflicts, guide industry development, and foster collaboration.

Key areas of focus included promoting private sector participation to drive innovation, reducing reliance on fuel imports through local refining, and investing in infrastructure to support energy sustainability. MEMAN highlighted the importance of enhancing human capital through education and skill development, as well as ensuring open access to promote fair competition in the energy market.

Chairman of MEMAN, Huub Stokman, noted that recent achievements in Nigeria’s refining sector, such as the opening of the Dangote Refinery and the development of modular refineries, represent critical steps toward securing the country’s energy future. He acknowledged the inevitable start-up challenges but emphasized that these refineries will shape Nigeria’s energy landscape for decades.

Stokman also stressed the importance of maintaining fair competition to foster progress and innovation in the energy sector. “Competition drives efficiency, reduces costs, and ensures consumers have access to the best energy solutions,” he stated.

The complex energy supply chain, particularly during the current energy transition, requires public and private stakeholders to collaborate for progress. By focusing on energy diversity, including traditional fuels, renewables like solar, and electric vehicles, MEMAN aims to meet Nigeria’s growing energy demands while minimizing environmental impact.

MEMAN remains committed to working with industry players to build a resilient, sustainable, and innovative energy future for Nigeria.
