Maritime Workers Union Issues Directive for Port Shutdown
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a directive for workers to close all port formations across the country starting from Tuesday. This decision aligns with the nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
The strike is a protest against the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and others in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as various unresolved labor issues in the state.
In a statement released by the Head of Media, John Ikemefuna, on behalf of the President-General, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, MWUN announced the commencement of a nationwide strike starting at midnight on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The decision to go on strike follows the directive from the NLC after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Monday, November 13, 2023.

The NLC and TUC jointly made this decision during their meeting in Abuja, prompted by concerns about violations of workers’ rights, incidents involving the abduction and assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other union officials, and other issues.
The statement from MWUN cited several grievances, including the government’s failure to implement agreements, non-payment of backlog salaries and pensions, discriminatory salary payments, and non-compliance with the national minimum wage. As an affiliate of the NLC, MWUN is prepared to embark on a nationwide strike in adherence to the directive from the NLC.
