Maritime Workers to Halt Strike as NPA Resolves Dispute with Oil Operators

On January 8, 2024, Mohammed Bello-Koko, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), played a key role in mediating a resolution between the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and marginal field operators in the oil and gas industry regarding non-compliance with stevedoring regulations.

In his appeal to the maritime workers during the meeting, Bello-Koko expressed the commitment of the Ports Authority to take all necessary measures to ensure industrial harmony.

He emphasized the importance of preventing the shutdown of critical production platforms in the oil and gas sector and other related industries controlled by maritime workers. Bello-Koko highlighted that, at the current juncture, a shutdown could have adverse effects on the national economy, and therefore, it is crucial to avoid such disruptions.

The meeting convened as a preventive measure against an imminent shutdown of the national economy. It concluded with the signing of a communique that addressed the concerns raised by the workers. Subsequently, the planned strike action was suspended.
