Marine and Blue Economy Ministry, NIMASA, Committed to Promoting Industry Partnerships

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to fostering partnerships between the government and private sector, aiming to promote innovation and sustainability in Nigeria’s maritime sector. Speaking at the Stakeholders Sensitisation Workshop on Deep Seabed Activities in Abuja, Oyetola highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in unlocking the maritime sector’s potential, which is crucial for diversifying the country’s economy.

He noted that Nigeria’s transition from a fossil fuel-based economy to a mineral-based one presents opportunities to harness marine resources like wave and tidal energy for clean energy production. This shift aligns with the country’s energy goals and the global trend toward deep-sea exploration, with the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in 2023 demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to these efforts.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Oloruntola Olufemi, Oyetola explained that the workshop was intended to increase awareness among stakeholders about the opportunities in deep seabed exploration. Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), also expressed the agency’s commitment to ensuring Nigeria complies with global standards, working closely with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and other relevant bodies.

Dr. Mobereola stressed the importance of updating the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 to incorporate ISA’s model legislation for deep-sea exploration and exploitation. He assured that NIMASA, in collaboration with the Ministry, would work to ensure sustainable marine practices and compliance with safety standards.

The workshop was attended by representatives from key organizations such as the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, showcasing the broad commitment to advancing Nigeria’s marine and blue economy sectors.
