Malawi Government Identifies Critical Electricity Need for Mining Sector Growth.
In a significant revelation, Dr. Jane Banda, Head of Malawi’s Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), has underscored the indispensable need for electricity to power the country’s burgeoning mining sector. During a recent Mining Pre-Lab meeting held in Lilongwe, Dr. Banda disclosed that the mining industry in Malawi requires a substantial 230 Mega Watts (MW) of electricity, constituting a staggering 40 percent of the nation’s current generation capacity.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Banda, who also serves as Deputy Secretary for the Office of President and Cabinet (DSPC), highlighted the myriad challenges facing the mining sector, including inadequate infrastructure such as energy access and road networks, as well as insufficient investments.
“The vitality of electricity in propelling the mining industry cannot be overstated. Malawi must adequately prepare to meet the energy demands of the mining sector,” emphasized Dr. Banda.
Joseph Mkandawire, the Principal Secretary for Mining, echoed Dr. Banda’s sentiments, emphasizing the substantial energy requirements of the sector, which exceed the country’s current consumption levels.
“We are in discussions with the energy sector to address the bottlenecks hindering progress. Companies will commence operations in a phased approach, rather than all at once,” explained Mkandawire.
