Lekki Deep Sea Port Welcomes Largest Container Ship on Nigerian Waters, a 13,092 TEUs Vessel
The berthing of the Maersk Edirne, a container ship with a capacity of 13,092 TEUs, at Lekki Port in Nigeria marks a significant milestone. Lekki Port, known as Nigeria’s deepest seaport, welcomed the largest container ship ever to dock in the country. The vessel is part of the new CMA CGM WAX service, operating on crucial routes that include Lekki Port.
Biodun Dabiri, Chairman of Lekki Port, emphasized the port’s modern facilities and world-class equipment that enabled it to accommodate such large vessels. The event is seen as elevating Lagos State and Nigeria on the international maritime scene, contributing to Nigeria’s pursuit of becoming a maritime hub in the sub-Saharan African region.
Laurence Smith, COO of Lekki Port, highlighted the positive impact of accommodating such sizable vessels on the Nigerian economy, facilitating increased cargo delivery and reducing shipping costs. Mohammed Bello-Koko, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, praised the accomplishment and acknowledged the support from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
