Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway not priority – Obi

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has responded to allegations of incitement from the Federal Government regarding his stance on the Coastal Highway Project. Obi reaffirmed his position that the trillions of Naira Coastal Highway Project is not a priority in present-day Nigeria.

In his response, Obi maintained that his stance on the project remains unchanged, emphasizing that allegations of incitement are divisive actions aimed at diverting attention from the main issue he raised. He argued that prioritizing such a project at this time would lead to job losses, increased hunger, and heightened poverty in an already troubled land.

“Priority should be put on internal roads first to move the economy,” Obi stated.

Obi stressed the importance of focusing on internal roads first to stimulate the economy and address pressing issues within the country. He also took the opportunity to address allegations surrounding the demolition that took place during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

“Let me be unequivocal: during my governorship, I made it abundantly clear that all structures obstructing existing roads and lacking approval would be removed,” Obi clarified.

Clarifying the circumstances of the demolitions, Obi asserted that structures obstructing existing roads and lacking approval were removed during his governorship. He challenged anyone to provide evidence to the contrary, stating that the demolitions were necessary to restore infrastructure to its intended purpose and honor commitments to the community.

Obi provided concrete examples of his actions, citing the demolition and relocation of the Onitsha North local government headquarters and the conversion of the Onitsha South Stadium into a local government office. He emphasized that his decisions were strategic, aimed at prioritizing the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure over disruptive projects.

“Claims of incitement are baseless distractions. I advocate for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary politics,” Obi asserted.

Drawing a distinction between his administration’s approach and the ongoing coastal road construction, Obi highlighted the destructive impact of the latter on jobs and livelihoods. He rejected allegations of incitement, describing them as baseless distractions aimed at tarnishing his character.
