IRENA, Partners to Decarbonise Industrial Value Chains
Twenty-eight organisations and knowledge partners in a coalition, the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation, have made further progress in their aim to decarbonise industrial value chains and speed up the world’s energy transition goals in conformity with the Paris Agreement.
Industrial emissions form 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions and the sector consumes almost 40% of global energy production. The goal of limiting global temperatures to 1.50C would not be achievable without considerable industrial emissions reduction.
The Director General, IRENA, Francesco La Camera said that the alliance was committed to decarbonisation while welcoming new partners to the coalition at its maiden meeting. He added, “By standing together we send a clear signal of solidarity at COP27, and we invite new partners to join our common vision.”
Co-Chairman of the alliance and President/Chief Executive Officer, Siemens Energy stated that there was a need for urgency in action as the technologies were already available. “The recent IPCC report has made it clear that without major changes, global warming will increase more than 3.2 °C. There is no alternative to the energy transition – we need to act together for just, ambitious implementation now.”
The CEO/MD of Tata Steel, T.V. Narendran noted that climate change remained a pressing issue for humankind and industrial firms made up a significant share of missions. “The key is to collaborate among a wide range of organisations including experts, academia, technology providers, and research institutions, and to find solutions together and faster. I believe ‘Alliance for Industry Decarbonization’ can play a significant role in building a sustainable planet for all.”
Since its launch in September, the Alliance has officially welcomed State of Green as a new knowledge partner and 13 new members: OQ, the KIS Group, VALE, ATC Development, Subsea7, Elsewedy Electric, FLSmidth, Petronas, Ecopetrol, Unilever, Envision, Alfanar Global Development and Alzahid Group
