GOCOP Advocates Balanced Regulatory Framework for Nigeria’s Digital Content

The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has emphasized the need for a balanced regulatory framework to guide the production of digital content in Nigeria.

This call was made by GOCOP’s Deputy General Secretary, Olumide Iyanda, during the opening ceremony of the 4th Peace Anyiam-Osigwe Nigeria Digital Content Regulation Conference (NDCRC) held in Lagos. The two-day event, organized by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), is themed “Film and Video Regulation in the Digital Age, Balancing Creativity and Responsibility.”

Iyanda praised the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, and NFVCB’s leadership under Dr. Shaibu Husseini for their efforts to foster responsible digital content creation.

“The NFVCB’s commitment to a regulatory framework that upholds creativity while respecting societal values aligns deeply with GOCOP’s mission to promote professionalism and ethical journalism in the digital age,” Iyanda noted.

He added that the conference is a tribute to the late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe’s visionary contributions to Nigeria’s creative industry and an avenue for collaboration and strategizing for a responsible future in digital content.

Dr. Husseini, Executive Director of the NFVCB, highlighted the importance of collaboration in fostering a vibrant and responsible creative sector. He acknowledged the transformative role of the late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, after whom the conference is named.

In her keynote address, Mo Abudu, Founder of EbonyLife Group, stressed the role of African creatives in reshaping global narratives.

“With great power comes great responsibility. We must balance creative freedom with protecting our audiences, especially children, from harmful content,” Abudu said, urging creators to tell compelling African stories that resonate globally.
