Global Renewable Energy Surge: Nations Amplify Climate Targets Ahead of 2035

LONDON, UK – A compelling new report has revealed a significant global push towards renewable energy, as nations worldwide submit their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) in anticipation of the 2035 climate goals. Conducted by 350.org in collaboration with Zero Carbon Analytics, the analysis paints a picture of growing commitment to cleaner energy sources.

The report, which scrutinized climate plans submitted as of March 10, 2025, highlights that 15 out of 19 countries have now integrated specific targets or clear ambitions to expand renewable energy within their national climate strategies. Notably, seven countries have introduced new or strengthened renewable energy goals, and more than 80% have voiced support for the COP28 objective of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030.

“The latest climate plan submissions reveal that countries are stepping up on renewables – beneath shifting political winds the trajectory is clear and more positive than many might have expected,” stated Andreas Sieber, Associate Director of Policy and Campaigns at 350.org. “The momentum for renewables continues and is building. But we need more. With the world facing devastating climate impacts and rising energy prices from fossil fuels, we can’t afford half-measures.”

Victoria Kalyvas, a Research Associate at Zero Carbon Analytics, emphasized the growing recognition of renewables as a cornerstone of future energy systems. “An increasing number of countries view renewables as a fundamental pillar of their energy future,” she said. “Some nations are emerging as frontrunners in the accelerating clean energy transition, demonstrating a clear commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels.”

Leading Nations Set Ambitious Goals:

  • United Kingdom: Aims for at least 95% renewable and nuclear electricity by 2030.
  • United Arab Emirates: Plans to boost renewable energy capacity by over 500% by 2030.
  • United States: Commits to 100% clean electricity by 2035, including renewables and nuclear.
  • Marshall Islands: Targets 66% renewable energy by 2030, with a long-term goal of net-zero energy systems by 2050.
  • Brazil: Has already surpassed its 2030 target, achieving 89% renewable electricity in 2023.

Other nations like Japan and Switzerland are also accelerating their renewable energy deployment.

Call for Action and Accountability:

Despite the positive momentum, the report stresses the need for concrete action. Governments are urged to implement robust policies, increase public and private investment, and establish clear accountability measures.

“Countries must now back their renewable energy pledges with robust policies, and the European Union, China, and others yet to submit their targets must harness this momentum,” Sieber urged.

Countries yet to submit their updated NDCs must do so by September. This deadline is crucial for assessing global progress towards climate goals as nations prepare to set new emissions reduction targets for 2035.

Key Takeaways:

  • Global momentum for renewable energy is increasing.
  • Many nations are setting ambitious renewable energy targets.
  • Concrete action and policy implementation are essential.
  • The September NDC submission deadline is critical.

This report underscores the urgent need for decisive action to ensure a sustainable energy future and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
