Lokpobiri Affirms Continued FG Support for PTI in Oil Sector Development.

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), has reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State, as a vital hub for developing skilled manpower in the oil and gas sector. Speaking at the PTI matriculation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session, Lokpobiri, represented by Senior Aide Roland Oweilaemi, emphasized the administration’s dedication to enhancing the institute’s infrastructure and facilities.

Lokpobiri highlighted PTI’s critical role in the nation’s oil and gas industry, stressing that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would continue to prioritize the institute. He assured that PTI would receive special attention from the federal government to fulfill its mandate of producing well-trained technicians and technologists essential for the industry.

The ceremony saw the matriculation of 1,793 students, both full-time and part-time, into various programs. Lokpobiri underscored the strategic importance of PTI, noting that Nigeria, as Africa’s largest oil producer and holder of the continent’s largest natural gas reserves, relies heavily on the oil and gas sector. This sector contributes significantly to the economy, accounting for about 65% of government revenue and over 85% of total exports, while contributing 6.63% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“To sustain production levels and harness our vast hydrocarbon potential, Nigeria needs a steady influx of competent technicians and technologists,” Lokpobiri stated. “Institutions like PTI are poised to meet this demand through rigorous training and education.”

He urged students to commit fully to their studies, emphasizing the importance of their role in the future of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. “Your dedication to your education will ensure you become the skilled professionals our industry needs,” he said.

Lokpobiri also pledged ongoing support from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, promising continued collaboration and assistance to PTI in enhancing its infrastructure and facilities.

Dr. Samuel Onoji, Acting Principal and Chief Executive Officer of PTI Effurun, encouraged the new students to adhere to the institute’s rules and regulations, warning that violations could lead to expulsion. He reminded them of the federal government’s declaration of 2021-2030 as Nigeria’s decade of gas and urged them to seize opportunities to develop additional skills and certifications during their studies.
