The Federal Government yesterday announced commencement of a major review to power procurement policy.

Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, who declared this during the Power Nigeria conference in Lagos, maintained that the fresh policy direction would, among other things, guarantee the evacuation of over 2000 Mega Watt of power stranded between generation and distribution companies in the value chain.

“We are embarking on aggressive deployment of distribution expansion scheme for 2000MW evacuation,” the minister who was represented by Director of Procurement, Federal Ministry of Power, Engineer Ahmed Abdu, said.

The government, the minister said fielding questions from New Telegraph, had come up with fresh strategy on how the stranded 2000 Mega Watt of electricity would be utilized.

The procurement was being looked into, according to Mamman, and this was also having fresh positive effects on Distribution Expansion Programme.

Mamman said: “So, as a matter of policy, the Federal Executive Council approved Distribution Expansion Program, which has been implemented since September 2018.

“So, the new idea is that if we have the necessary infrastructure like distribution substations, if there is any transmission line passing and near it there is an eligible customer, he or she can be easily connected with that high tension line, which be either 303 Kv line or 132 kv line.

This can be connected with the packet distribution sub-station, which comes in form of a container.

“The importance of improving regulations and policies in procurement is key in tackling Nigeria’s energy issues and boosting the socio-economic development of the country.”
