Federal Government Reinforces Commitment to Gas Utilization for Economic Advancement

In alignment with its “renewed hope” agenda, the Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to invigorate the nation’s industrial growth and catalyze its economic prosperity.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed this commitment while inaugurating three pivotal gas infrastructure projects implemented by NNPC Limited and its partners in Ohaji-Egbema, Imo State, and Kwale, Delta State, on Wednesday.

The commissioned projects include the expansion of the AHL Gas Processing Plant, the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, and the 23.3km ANOH to Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Custody Transfer Metering Station Gas Pipeline Projects.

President Tinubu highlighted that these projects would collectively supply approximately 500 million standard cubic feet of gas to the domestic market, representing over 25% incremental growth in gas supply. This increased supply will translate into enhanced provision of gas to the Power Sector, Gas-Based Industries, and other critical segments of the economy.

From the onset of his administration, President Tinubu emphasized leveraging the vast capacity of gas to deepen domestic utilization, boost national power generation capacity, revitalize industries, and generate numerous job opportunities for economic growth.

He underscored the significance of initiatives like the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, aimed at transitioning Nigerians away from petrol and diesel as vehicular combustion fuels. Additionally, he noted the progress made in incentivizing gas development through Presidential Executive Orders.

While commending the project partners – NNPC Limited, Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO), and Seplat Energy – for the successful implementation of the projects, President Tinubu charged NNPC Limited to sustain its efforts and achieve more successes in the energy sector for the benefit of all Nigerians.

He described the commissioning as a major milestone demonstrating the administration’s commitment to accelerating the development of critical gas infrastructure, enhancing energy supply to boost industrial growth, and create employment opportunities.

President Tinubu emphasized that these projects align fully with the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative and the quest to extract value from Nigeria’s abundant gas assets while eliminating gas flaring and promoting industrialization.

He assured citizens that these projects represent just the beginning, as the government intensifies efforts to realize gas-fueled prosperity in the country. The President emphasized that the government is investment-enabling and committed to facilitating ease of doing business, particularly in the energy sector.

In his address, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo highlighted the ministry’s efforts to champion gas utilization as a transition fuel towards achieving clean energy efficiency and security by 2060. He commended President Tinubu for his leadership and support for the success of the projects.

GCEO of NNPC, Mr. Mele Kyari, described the commissioning as a testament to the President’s commitment to grow domestic gas utilization for power generation, as feedstock for gas-based industries, and overall rapid industrialization of Nigeria. He assured that NNPC Ltd remains committed to maintaining energy security by executing more strategic gas projects for the benefit of Nigeria
