Federal Government Commits to Enhancing Onne Seaport Efficiency and Safety
In a recent development, the Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to enhancing the efficiencies and maximizing the capacity utilization of the Onne seaport, emphasizing its commitment to boosting vessel traffic to Eastern ports. This affirmation came from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, during the commissioning of a 4.8km road project and six mooring boats at the Onne port complex in Rivers State.
Minister Oyetola disclosed that the federal government has allocated $1 billion for the comprehensive reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructures across all seaports in Nigeria, with significant progress noted at the Onne port, which is nearing completion of its upgrades.
The new mooring boats are intended to facilitate the safe berthing and unberthing of vessels at various pilotage districts within the Onne port, further bolstering maritime security and safety initiatives.
Speaking at the event, Minister Oyetola emphasized the strategic importance of optimizing Onne and other Port Complexes in the eastern region to achieve the Key Performance Indicators set under the Presidential Performance Bond. He expressed satisfaction with the growing export numbers from the Onne Port Complex and pledged support to enhance vessel traffic, recognizing the port’s potential for economic growth.
The Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to invest in port infrastructure, including the substantial rehabilitation investments totaling over $1 billion across various ports, including the concluding stages of work at Onne.
Moreover, the Minister applauded the Onne and Calabar Port Complexes for meeting International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification requirements, signaling progress in operational standards. However, he stressed the need for continuous improvement until all ports meet international standards.
Mohammed Bello-Koko, Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, emphasized the importance of the newly commissioned road project in facilitating business operations at the port, reducing cargo dwell time, and increasing revenue generation. He also underscored the need for further infrastructure development, including concrete fencing, to enhance security and protect investments within the port area.
The completion of the 4.8km road, along with the procurement of modern mooring boats, signifies a strategic move by the Nigerian Ports Authority to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and competitiveness, ultimately contributing to economic growth and national development.
This comprehensive approach aligns with the government’s vision to transform Nigeria’s maritime sector into a hub of global standards, attracting increased investments and fostering sustainable growth.
