Federal Government Applauds Savannah Energy’s Investment in Nigeria’s Energy Sector
The Federal Government has commended Savannah Energy, a British independent energy company, for its significant contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector. Savannah’s investments, particularly in the domestic gas supply, have been recognized as pivotal to the country’s power generation and economic growth.
During a recent visit to the Uquo Gas Central Processing Facility in Akwa Ibom State, owned by Accugas Limited, a Savannah Energy subsidiary, the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, praised the company’s efforts. He acknowledged that Savannah now provides gas for around 20% of Nigeria’s thermal power generation, strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.
Highlighting the importance of natural gas in Nigeria’s economic plans, Ekpo reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to leveraging gas as a key driver of national growth. He emphasized that the government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative aims to make Nigeria’s economy gas-powered by 2030. “The President is very intentional and strategic about developing the gas sector to drive the economy,” he said.
Savannah Energy’s Managing Director, Pade Durotoye, accompanied the Minister during the visit. Durotoye revealed that Accugas Limited has invested over $1.6 billion in gas processing and infrastructure since 2014. He also announced an additional investment of $45 million in a new compression system at the Uquo facility, designed to boost gas export pressure and ensure reliable gas supply to domestic customers. The system, expected to be operational later this year, will have a capacity of 160 MMscfpd per train.
Durotoye underscored Savannah’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s transition to natural gas as a pathway to net-zero emissions, with a focus on power generation. He further noted that all of Savannah’s gas is utilized domestically, with 80% supplying thermal power plants and the remaining 20% serving large industrial customers, such as cement producers, contributing to about 10% of Nigeria’s cement production.
This strategic partnership between Savannah Energy and the Federal Government is seen as a critical boost to the country’s energy ambitions.
