Experts Suggest Unbundling Transmission Company Will Enhance Electricity Accessibility.

Several power experts have praised the decision of the Federal Government to unbundle the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), expressing optimism about its potential to enhance electricity access nationwide.

In interviews with Business Intelligence (TBI Africa) in Lagos, experts hailed the move, initiated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on May 3, as a significant step towards improving the country’s power sector. The decision involves splitting TCN into two entities, with the establishment of an Independent System Operator (ISO) to handle market and system operations functions.

Dr. Akinrolabu Olukayode, Chairman of the Customer Consultative Forum of Festac/Satellite Town, welcomed the unbundling, stating, “The attempt is striving at ensuring a balanced system where the monopoly enjoyed over these few years by TCN is dissolved to allow for new hands who will inject fresh ideas, devoid of monotonous inclined perennial failure as witnessed in recent time.”

Mr. Samuel Ilori, National Coordinator of the All Electricity Consumers Protection Forum, described the unbundling as “good and welcoming,” while cautioning the government to avoid repeating past mistakes made in the distribution sector. Ilori emphasized, “There is need for government to declare a state of emergency in power that will usher in fresh hands to rid the system of saboteurs.”

Echoing similar sentiments, power expert Mr. Toluwalase Godwin highlighted the role of the new Independent System Operator, stating, “The new operator would manage electricity demand and supply, ensuring the delivery of electricity where and when needed, without bias, at the lowest cost possible, while ensuring reliability and avoiding grid instability and collapse in the process.”

With experts expressing confidence in the potential positive impacts of this decision, there is hope for a more reliable and efficient electricity supply system, ultimately benefiting consumers and driving economic progress across the country.
