Collaboration Vital for Tackling Energy Challenges, Says NLNG Executive

Mr. Nnamdi Anowi, General Manager of Production at Nigeria LNG (NLNG), has called for strengthened collaboration among governments, regulators, and private sector players to address the world’s pressing energy challenges.

Speaking during the World Leaders’ Panel session at the 2024 World LNG Summit and Awards in Berlin, Germany, Anowi emphasized the need for unified efforts to tackle the “energy trilemma”—balancing energy security, affordability, and sustainability.

The summit, themed “Achieving the Balance Between Energy Security and Decarbonisation,” brought together over 750 participants, 200 speakers, and 500 companies across the energy value chain to discuss the evolving global energy landscape.

Anowi highlighted disparities in global energy access, with some regions enjoying ample supply while others struggle with affordability and accessibility.

He stressed the importance of a long-term perspective in developing advanced LNG technologies, adding that decarbonisation must be achieved in a sustainable manner. “We must consider our gas reserves and strategize on how to bring them to market affordably,” Anowi noted.

He also underscored the financial difficulties faced by gas-rich regions, which often impede the development of resources. Anowi called for collective action to create supportive regulatory frameworks that enable the energy sector to overcome these challenges effectively, urging stakeholders to adopt a global perspective when addressing energy solutions.

Detailing NLNG’s initiatives to improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions, Anowi noted that the company has embraced carbon certification, leveraged advanced technologies like drones for emissions monitoring, and pursued electrification of its operations.

He also discussed the integration of new energy solutions, including combined cycle power plants and hydrogen projects, with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, emphasizing that “it’s crucial that these projects are not pursued in isolation.”

Looking ahead, Anowi advocated for a balanced energy mix that combines traditional and renewable energy sources to achieve sustainable development. “By combining the right technologies and fostering collaborative efforts, we can reduce our carbon footprint while ensuring energy access for all,” he concluded.

The 24th World LNG Summit and Awards, organized by DMG Events Ltd., served as a key platform for global energy leaders to share insights on navigating the complex transition toward a sustainable energy future.
