EKEDC Raises Concern Over Rejection of Free Prepaid Meters
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has expressed concern over the rejection of free prepaid meters by some Band A customers under the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme. The initiative was introduced to address the issue of estimated billing and improve transparency in electricity consumption.
Speaking at the Customer Consultative Forum in Ojo, Lagos, EKEDC’s Head of Metering, Mr. Gbadebo Akinyede, revealed that while the company had successfully installed about 2,900 meters, approximately 2,400 instances of rejection had been recorded.
“We are surprised to see the high rate of rejection, especially when our installers clearly communicate to customers that these meters are free,” Akinyede said. “The rejection rate is almost equal to the rate of installations, which is concerning.”
Despite the challenges, Akinyede noted that EKEDC had made significant progress, successfully installing about 98 percent of its backlog of meters. The remaining two percent, he said, would be completed by the end of March.

“Out of the approximately 5,000 cases, we have resolved about 4,800,” he stated, attributing previous delays to issues encountered in December. “Most of these have now been addressed, and the remaining two percent represents new issues, which we plan to resolve within the month.”
EKEDC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all eligible customers benefit from the free meter initiative, as part of its broader efforts to enhance billing accuracy and service delivery.
The forum, which was attended by customers from the Ojo Business Unit, covered areas including Isashi, Mabaonu, Afro Media, Celestial Market, Iba Town, Iba New Site, Agboroko, Igbo-Elerin, Ojo, Alaba, Agric, Okoko, Shibiri, Riverine, and Jakande.
