EKEDC Harps on Safety, Battles Energy Theft and Vandalism.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has raised alarms over the increasing incidents of energy theft and vandalism within its operational area, which have resulted in significant revenue losses. These concerns were voiced during a town hall customers’ forum held on Thursday in Lagos.

Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh, the acting Chief Executive Officer of EKEDC, highlighted these issues, emphasizing the company’s commitment to safeguarding lives, properties, and equipment. Represented by Mrs. Catherine Ezeafulukwe, the Chief Customer Experience Officer, Momoh reiterated the need for collaboration with customers to tackle these challenges.

The forum, organized by The Business Intelligence (TBI Africa), gathered customers from various zones under the Orile District, including Surulere, Aguda, Coker, Orile, Ikate, Animashaun, Doyin, Sanya, parts of Eric Moore, TEXLON, Passat, parts of Alaka, parts of Itire, and Kernel.

Momoh disclosed that EKEDC is losing billions of naira due to energy theft, meter bypassing, vandalism, and unpaid electricity bills. She pointed out that these illegal activities significantly impact both the company’s revenue and its customers.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy for energy theft. Over 15 percent of electricity consumers do not pay their electricity bills, as they indulge in illegal connection of electricity,” she stated.

Addressing the issue of metering, Momoh announced that EKEDC is committed to metering all its customers under a five-year metering plan, noting that over 70 percent of customers have already been metered. She urged customers to participate in the ongoing metering installation plan and apply for meters online.

Regarding customers on Band A feeders, Momoh mentioned that the company is exploring ways to internally relocate those who cannot afford the Band A tariff to Bands B or C.

Community representatives at the forum praised EKEDC’s prompt response to faults and customer service. Mr. Onalaja Adekunle, Chairman of Onigbo-Ore Community Development Area, commended EKEDC’s efforts and urged for effective metering to avoid estimated billing.

Mr. Sunny Ogidan, Chairman of the Communications Development Committee in Orile-Aguda, expressed a willingness to collaborate with the police and local government officials to protect EKEDC’s facilities. He also called for reorientation of EKEDC’s field officers towards better customer service delivery.

The town hall meeting, held at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), was attended by over 100 residents, providing a platform for peaceful discussions and solutions to the challenges facing electricity customers in the area.
