EKEDC Advocates Safety, Urges Customers to Apply for Prepaid Meters.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has called on its unmetered customers to register for prepaid meters as a means to eliminate the challenges of estimated billing. Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh, the acting Chief Executive Officer of EKEDC, made this appeal during a Customer Engagement forum held at the Ijora Business Unit on Thursday.

Represented by Mr. Samuel Edoho, General Manager, Commercial, EKEDC, Mrs. Momoh emphasized the importance of collaboration between the electricity distribution company and its customers to enhance service delivery. She reassured customers of the company’s commitment to safeguarding lives, properties, and equipment, while also addressing various concerns raised by the communities under EKEDC’s network.

The forum brought together customers from multiple areas, including Otto, Iganmu, Ijora, Alaka, Iponri, Ebute Metta, Adekunle, Iwaya, Onike, Surulere, Yaba, and Ajegunle. The event provided an opportunity for direct interaction with customers, allowing EKEDC to gather feedback and swiftly address issues related to power supply, vandalism, and other challenges affecting service delivery.

Mrs. Momoh highlighted the ongoing efforts by EKEDC to bridge the metering gap within its network by providing smart meters to all electricity consumers. She urged customers who have not yet registered for prepaid meters to visit EKEDC’s official website and complete the application process to benefit from the ongoing metering initiative. Additionally, she assured customers that payments made to purchase meters would be refunded through tokens.

In addressing concerns about meter installer extortion, Mrs. Momoh warned customers against paying any additional fees for meter installation. She reiterated that meter installers are not authorized to request extra payments and that several installers and vendors had already faced sanctions for such activities.

Looking ahead, EKEDC plans to implement a special metering arrangement under the Presidential Metering Initiative, with Band A customers being prioritized for meter installations.

Mrs. Momoh also emphasized the importance of customers reporting any unauthorized entities or activities, such as meter bypass, tampering, and vandalism, to EKEDC’s whistleblowing channels. She assured that the company would take necessary actions against such criminal activities, as approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, General Manager, Corporate Communications at EKEDC, echoed the call for customers to refrain from illegal activities that could negatively impact the power industry and urged community leaders to take responsibility for protecting EKEDC’s infrastructure.

EKEDC’s efforts to promote the adoption of prepaid meters and its commitment to addressing customer concerns aim to improve overall service delivery and customer satisfaction across its network.
