Egbin Power Advocates for Stakeholder Collaboration to Boost Nigeria’s Energy Security
Egbin Power, the largest power generation company in Nigeria, has highlighted the necessity of collaboration among stakeholders in the energy sector as a key driver for the country’s socio-economic growth and energy security. This call for partnership was made by Egbin Power’s CEO, Mokhtar Bounour, during the Leadership Summit at the 2024 Nigeria Energy Conference, held in Lagos.
Speaking at a panel session titled “Gas to Power Generation: Market Dynamics and Energy Security,” Bounour emphasized the interconnected nature of the energy sector. He pointed out that cohesive efforts among players across the value chain—including power generation companies (GenCos), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), distribution companies, regulators, and suppliers—are crucial for ensuring a stable and efficient power supply to Nigerian homes and businesses.
“All stakeholders must work together to create an efficient system. All of us—from the GenCo, TCN, the Distribution Company, the regulators, and suppliers—have a common objective, which is to ensure that customers have a steady supply,” Bounour stated. He further underscored Egbin Power’s commitment to maintaining strong communication and collaboration with partners and regulators to ensure uninterrupted electricity distribution.
Bounour also highlighted the critical role of gas in Nigeria’s power generation, referring to gas suppliers as essential partners. “We view our gas suppliers as partners because their sustainability is our sustainability as well. Liquidity is also very important,” he noted, emphasizing the need for stable financial flows within the sector to ensure operational continuity.
Despite the challenges faced by the energy sector, Bounour expressed optimism about opportunities for investment and growth. He pointed to Egbin Power’s focus on building strong partnerships with suppliers and regulatory bodies to meet its obligations and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s power industry.
The panel, comprising other industry experts, echoed Bounour’s views, noting that increased investment, enhanced collaboration, and a dedicated effort to address challenges are essential to improving Nigeria’s power sector.
As a leader in the industry, Egbin Power has committed to expanding its capacity without sacrificing reliability. The company has invested in modernizing equipment, upgrading infrastructure, and employing predictive maintenance strategies to boost efficiency and availability.
