EEDC Seeks EFCC Collaboration to Combat Energy Theft and Vandalism

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has called for a strategic partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to address economic sabotage, including energy theft and vandalization of electricity infrastructure across its service states.

EEDC, which operates in Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu States, emphasized the urgency of this collaboration during a recent visit by the Acting Zonal Director of the Enugu Zonal Command of the EFCC, Mohammed Shaib Bello, to the EEDC Managing Director, Praveen Chorghade, in Enugu.

During the meeting, Managing Director Praveen Chorghade highlighted the critical assistance needed from the EFCC to tackle various challenges such as non-payment of electricity bills, theft, and vandalization of infrastructure in Enugu State. He acknowledged the significant role the EFCC plays in stabilizing the nation’s economy, noting that the vandalization of electricity infrastructure is an increasingly prevalent economic crime.

“EEDC is faced with several challenges ranging from electricity theft, non-payment of electricity bills, stealing of electricity cables, attack on personnel on field duties, and vandalization of electricity infrastructure,” Chorghade lamented.

In response, Acting Zonal Director Mohammed Shaib Bello expressed the EFCC’s commitment to supporting EEDC in combating economic sabotage in the state. Bello emphasized the necessity of collaboration between the EFCC and EEDC to effectively address these issues.

“There is a need for collaboration between us (EFCC and EEDC) in order to put a stop to this nonsense,” Bello asserted, assuring Chorghade of the EFCC’s unwavering support in tackling the non-payment of electricity bills and the vandalization of infrastructure in the state.

This partnership aims to strengthen efforts to safeguard electricity infrastructure and ensure a more stable and reliable power supply within EEDC’s service areas, ultimately contributing to economic stability and growth.
