The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that electricity distribution companies (Discos) would have to invest about $4 billion over the next three years to be able to match its ongoing expansion of the national grid to take up to 20,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated in the country, and also distribute same by 2021.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview during a programme on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abuja, the Managing Director of the TCN, Mr. Usman Mohammed, explained that the $4 billion projected investment figure was gotten from a study the TCN did on its grid expansion programme and which included an assessment of the Discos’ capacities and expansion needs.
Mohammed, who also picked holes in the opposition allegedly mounted by the Discos through their umbrella association – the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) – against the N72 billion the government plans to invest in the upgrade of the distribution networks and which is to be part-managed by TCN, stated that modalities for the disbursement of the fund had not been agreed yet.
