Decade of Gas Boosts Knowledge Sharing with Energy Journalist Training in Lagos
Recognizing Nigeria’s vast gas reserves and its potential as a key driver of energy sector growth, the Decade of Gas initiative held its inaugural training program for energy journalists in Lagos.
Focus on Gas as a Transition Fuel:
With a decline in global oil prices, Nigeria is strategically shifting its focus towards natural gas. This abundant resource offers a cleaner alternative fuel source during the national energy transition.
Equipping Journalists for Informed Reporting:
The Decade of Gas workshop aimed to equip energy journalists with a deeper understanding of the gas sector. The program covered critical topics such as:
- Improving Gas Supply: Discussions explored strategies to enhance gas availability throughout Nigeria.
- Gas Pricing Mechanisms: Journalists gained insights into gas pricing structures and their impact.
- Critical Gas Infrastructure: Experts addressed the importance of gas infrastructure development and maintenance.
- Capacity Building for the Gas Sector: The workshop highlighted initiatives to strengthen human resources within the industry.
Transparency and Expertise Sharing:
- Ed Ubong, Chairman of Decade of Gas, provided a detailed overview of gas operations and the extensive gas infrastructure network across Nigeria. He also introduced the newly formed federal government team tasked with managing the sector. This team comprises experienced operators, industry professionals, and stakeholders with a long-standing commitment to the gas sector.
- Taji Ogbe, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Gas Association (NGA), shed light on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). He explained the distinct characteristics and compositions of each fuel type.
- Ramatu Abdullahi, Team Lead, Economic Principles at the Decade of Gas office, presented on the organization’s nationwide activities and its dedication to promoting gas development across Nigeria.
Safety and Education:
The training also placed emphasis on safe LPG usage. Journalists learned critical “do’s and don’ts” to prevent domestic accidents involving LPG.
By equipping energy journalists with comprehensive knowledge and fostering transparency, the Decade of Gas initiative empowers informed reporting and fosters public understanding of this critical sector for Nigeria’s future energy landscape.
