Customs Launches Operation Whirlwind to Combat Petrol Smuggling
In a bid to staunch the flow of petroleum products across its borders, the Nigeria Customs Service has initiated a specialized tactical initiative dubbed Operation Whirlwind. Headed by the Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, this task force aims to curb the illicit trade of petrol into neighboring countries.
During the inauguration of Operation Whirlwind, Adeniyi underscored the pivotal role the team will play in shielding Nigeria’s economy from the detrimental impacts of fuel smuggling. He highlighted the necessity of equipping the team with the requisite skills and knowledge through workshops tailored to combat smuggling, particularly the diversion of petroleum products to adjacent nations.
Adeniyi emphasized that the launch of Operation Whirlwind signifies a significant stride in Nigeria’s battle against smuggling and economic subversion. The team is entrusted with safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests with steadfast dedication and integrity, underpinned by an intelligence-driven approach.
“This is not merely a task force or the establishment of checkpoints,” Adeniyi stated. “This is an intelligence-driven operation bolstering the political will at the highest echelons. Our commitment and allegiance must remain steadfast, with severe consequences for any who contravene this mission. Sabotage will not be tolerated.”
