Court Allows Former CBN Governor Emefiele to Travel Outside FCT, With Stipulation to Remain in Nigeria

On Thursday, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court granted the request of Godwin Emefiele, the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, to travel outside the Federal Capital Territory. However, the court specified that Emefiele must remain within the country.

Previously, as part of his bail terms, the former CBN governor was confined to the Federal Capital Territory. In November, the court granted Emefiele bail in the amount of N300 million with two sureties in a similar sum.

His legal counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mathew Burkaa, confirmed that Emefiele was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after his lawyers fulfilled the bail conditions.

Emefiele faces a six-count charge related to procurement fraud and allegedly using his position to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN staff, by awarding a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles worth N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020. Notably, the initial six-count fraud charge has now been increased to 20 counts.

During his remand in Kuje, Godwin Emefiele was required to surrender all his travel documents to the court registrar and was restricted to staying within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) jurisdiction.
