Chevron Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Climate Action and Conservation at 23rd Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture
…38 PhD S.L. Edu Grants Awarded Since 2006
Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing climate action, nature conservation, and supporting global net-zero goals through innovation, collaboration, and research in Nigeria. This was announced during the 23rd Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture in Lagos, honoring the late founder of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), Chief S.L. Edu.
Speaking at the event, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria, Jim Swartz, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to reducing carbon intensity, expanding lower-carbon businesses, and supporting a sustainable, lower-carbon future. Represented by the General Manager of Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, Swartz noted Chevron’s vision of delivering affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy solutions that promote human progress and environmental preservation in Nigeria and beyond.
“Chevron Nigeria enhances environmental performance with innovative projects in energy efficiency, flare reductions, renewables, and carbon capture. In Nigeria, we collaborate with the National Climate Change Council on developing the Carbon Market Framework,” Swartz said.
The event featured a keynote address by Nigeria’s former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, titled “Greening Africa’s Economies: Can Climate Positive Growth Deliver Prosperity?” Swartz commended Osinbajo for his insightful address, which highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing climate challenges. Swartz also expressed Chevron’s support for Osinbajo’s ‘Call to Action,’ which underscored the urgency of achieving Africa’s sustainable development goals.
Longstanding Support for Conservation Efforts
Chevron Nigeria’s dedication to conservation was further highlighted through its ongoing partnership with the NCF. Swartz praised the foundation’s leadership in nature preservation over the past 45 years and reaffirmed Chevron’s commitment to supporting its initiatives.
One notable project funded by Chevron is the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC), established in 1992 as a sanctuary for the diverse flora and fauna of the Lekki Peninsula. “Today, the LCC stands as one of Africa’s most prominent and diverse urban parks, attracting tourists and researchers globally while contributing to Nigeria’s economy,” Swartz remarked. The LCC also serves as a safe habitat for endangered species and plays a vital role in carbon dioxide absorption.
Swartz proudly highlighted Chevron Corporation’s status as a signatory of the Paris Agreement, reinforcing the company’s global pledge to combat climate change and achieve net-zero emissions.
Chevron Nigeria has also invested significantly in education, awarding 38 PhD grants under the S.L. Edu grant scheme since 2006 to support research in climate and environmental sustainability.
