Botswana Leads as Africa’s Premier Mining Destination.

Botswana has once again secured its position as Africa’s leading mining destination and ranks among the top 10 mining jurisdictions globally, according to the 2023 Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies. This prestigious survey evaluates the perceptions of mining company executives on the policies that influence the attractiveness of various regions for mining investments.

In the 2023 survey, Botswana achieved a remarkable 4th place out of 86 on the Policy Perception Index (PPI), marking it as the highest-ranked jurisdiction in Africa. Despite a minor decline in its PPI score, attributed to concerns about skilled labor, infrastructure, geological database, and uncertainty concerning protected areas, Botswana has maintained its top position in Africa.

Globally, the top 10 mining destinations for 2023, as per the survey, are:

  1. Utah
  2. Saskatchewan
  3. Manitoba
  4. Botswana
  5. Nevada
  6. Quebec
  7. Arizona
  8. Finland
  9. Wyoming
  10. Alberta

The United States and Canada each boast four jurisdictions in the top 10, while Africa and Europe each have one.

South Africa’s policy score saw an increase, but its overall ranking fell to 64th out of 86. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe experienced a significant 24-point increase in its policy score, yet it remains one of the least attractive jurisdictions for mining investment worldwide, ranking 81st out of 86.

The Fraser Institute’s Annual Survey of Mining Companies provides a crucial benchmark for the mining industry, reflecting the evolving perceptions of mining jurisdictions around the world.
