Benue State to Introduce Groundbreaking Electricity Regulation Law
Benue State is set to revolutionize its energy sector with the introduction of a state-specific electricity law aimed at addressing energy challenges and enhancing power supply.
The Commissioner for Transport, Renewable Energy, and Power, Mr. Omale Omale, disclosed the initiative during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Makurdi.
Mr. Omale revealed that the proposed legislation is currently under review by the Ministry of Justice. Once finalized, it will be presented to the State Executive Council for approval before being forwarded to the House of Assembly as an executive bill.
“The law will address the energy needs in unserved and underserved communities in the state,” he said. “There are some communities without electricity infrastructure, which fall into the unserved category, while others have the infrastructure but lack regular electricity supply. As a ministry, we understand the energy needs of all Benue people and are committed to resolving them.”
The commissioner highlighted that the enactment of the law aligns with the provisions of the new Electricity Act, which empowers states to actively participate in the energy market. This includes generating, distributing, and regulating electricity within their jurisdictions.
This development underscores Benue State’s commitment to fostering growth and ensuring energy equity for its residents, particularly those in remote areas.
