Benue NGOs Plant 20000 Trees to Combat Climate Change.
Elim Christian Vocational Training Center (Elim CVTC), in collaboration with Environmental and Climate Change Amelioration Initiatives (ECCAI) and their partners, has announced a bold initiative to address climate change in Benue State. The organizations have committed to planting 20,000 trees across the state within the next year, aiming to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on local communities.
This significant commitment was made during a symposium organized by the organizations to mark the 2024 World Climate Change Day in Makurdi. Themed “From Dialogue To Action,” the symposium saw participants pledge to establish a sustainable tree planting and maintenance program as part of their efforts.
Recognizing the urgent threat posed by climate change to the environment, human health, and economic development in Benue State and Nigeria as a whole, participants emphasized the critical role of tree planting and reforestation in combating climate change. They highlighted the immense potential of Benue State for forest cover restoration.
In a communiqué issued following the symposium, the organizers called on the government, private sector, and civil society to support and collaborate in this initiative. They stressed the importance of community engagement, education, and awareness in promoting climate change mitigation and tree planting efforts. The organizations also pledged to monitor progress, share knowledge, and adapt strategies as necessary to ensure the success of the initiative.
Furthermore, the communiqué outlined key recommendations, including the development and implementation of a comprehensive climate change policy, increased funding for climate change initiatives, establishment of a climate change commission, integration of climate change into government programs, and support for climate-resilient infrastructure development.
