Axxela’s Gasnexus and NGML Partner to Build Mini-LNG Plant for Stranded Industries in Northern Nigeria

Gasnexus, a subsidiary of Axxela, in partnership with NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), has announced the groundbreaking of a small-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. This strategic project, themed “From Gas to Prosperity: Catalysing Nigeria’s Economic Growth,” is part of a larger initiative led by NNPC and private sector partners to establish five mini-LNG plants in the region, aimed at driving sustainable energy development and economic transformation across Nigeria.

The Gasnexus/NGML plant will have a capacity of 20 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), to be developed in phases. The first phase will focus on a 7.5 MMSCFD facility, utilizing natural gas from the Oben-Ajaokuta pipeline to serve stranded industries and customers in Northern Nigeria and beyond. This effort aligns with the Federal Government’s goal of expanding energy access while supporting industrial growth.

Speaking at the event, Franklin Umole, Managing Director of Axxela Gas Midstream Infrastructure, highlighted the transformative potential of the project:
“The demand for cleaner energy, especially in underserved markets currently reliant on traditional fossil fuels, presents a significant opportunity. With Ajaokuta’s central location, we’re committed to delivering reliable, affordable natural gas across the northern region. This project isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about shaping Nigeria’s sustainable energy future.”

Echoing this sentiment, HRM Justin Ezeala, Managing Director of NGML, stated:
“This groundbreaking marks a pivotal milestone in our mission to ensure cleaner energy access for Nigerians. Our partnership with Gasnexus is a step toward unlocking the full potential of natural gas to drive industrial growth and enhance energy security. Together, we’re not just delivering LNG—we’re empowering businesses and catalyzing economic transformation.”

Once completed, the plant will significantly expand natural gas access to industrial and commercial customers outside the current pipeline network in Northern Nigeria. Additionally, the project will support the Federal Government’s flare reduction initiative, contributing to environmental sustainability while creating new opportunities for gas commercialization.
