Axxela and NGML Commission First Gas Pipeline in Lagos, Connecting Eko Atlantic City
Axxela Limited, a leading gas and power company in sub-Saharan Africa, in partnership with NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), has successfully commissioned a 5km natural gas pipeline network in Lagos. This newly completed segment, which connects Eko Atlantic City to piped natural gas (PNG), is part of a larger 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project extending from Victoria Island to the Lekki metropolis.
The commissioned pipeline runs from Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach, marking the first phase of the ambitious project. This network is set to serve customers along the route from the Five Cowrie River by the Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp to the proposed Lekki International Airport.
Kehinde Alabi, Chief Operating Officer of Axxela, highlighted the significance of this milestone: “The commissioning of the first phase of this 72.5km pipeline network underscores our commitment to expanding natural gas infrastructure within the Greater Lagos Area. By connecting Eko Atlantic City to first gas as a pioneer customer on this axis, we are paving the way for more access to the natural gas advantage, providing reliable energy solutions that can aid economic development. For us at Axxela, we are not only fueling businesses but also enabling the development of self-sustaining clusters, while strengthening Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.”
Justin Ezeala, Managing Director of NGML, echoed this sentiment, noting the long-standing partnership between NGML and Axxela: “Over the past two decades, NGML and Axxela have been at the forefront of natural gas advocacy. This expansion project reaffirms our dedication to developing natural gas infrastructure across Nigeria and Africa. Extending the pipeline network to the highly commercial Victoria Island and the rapidly developing Lekki area is a significant step in the right direction.”
David Frame, Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City, expressed enthusiasm about being the first customer connected to the pipeline. “This development ensures a more efficient, stable, affordable, and reliable supply of energy for our power generation needs, setting a benchmark for modern urban living. The sustainable nature of natural gas aligns perfectly with our vision of creating a future-ready city that prioritizes energy efficiency and environmental sustainability,” he said.
The collaboration between Axxela, NGML, and Eko Atlantic City is expected to meet the energy needs of this urban coastal city efficiently and reliably. Eko Atlantic City is also developing a 60MW capacity gas-powered plant, scheduled for commissioning in the coming years. As the city continues to expand, its power requirements will be critical for both residential and commercial activities.
Axxela, with its extensive experience in natural gas processing, distribution, and power development, currently delivers piped gas to about 200 industrial and commercial customers through a vast natural gas infrastructure network. This project is expected to significantly enhance domestic gas utilization, providing pipeline network access and readily available natural gas for businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor. The gas will serve various market segments, including cooling, industrial feedstock, and decentralized power solutions.
