Nigeria’s Gas Paradox: Minister Calls for Accelerated Domestic Utilisation Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s underutilization of its vast natural gas reserves, urging Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (SEPNU) to expedite efforts in boosting domestic consumption and exports. Describing the situation as a paradox, Ekpo noted the contradiction between Nigeria’s abundant gas resources and its low utilization levels. He called on industry players like SEPNU to work closely with the government to bridge this gap and maximize the country’s energy potential. Speaking through his spokesperson, Louis Ibah, on Wednesday, the minister made these remarks during a meeting with SEPNU’s senior management, led by Managing Director Dotun Isiaka, at the NNPC Towers in Abuja. The discussion focused on SEPNU’s progress since assuming operational control of ExxonMobil’s assets in December 2024, particularly in the gas sector. Ekpo commended SEPNU on the successful transition and urged the company to fast-track negotiations and execution of Gas Sales Agreements (GSAs). He emphasized that these agreements are crucial to driving growth in Nigeria’s gas industry and ensuring steady supply through strategic projects. “The minister emphasized the importance of SEPNU working harmoniously with its host communities to deliver value to all stakeholders and solidify its position as a leading independent indigenous energy company,” the statement read. He also stressed the need for timely execution of projects, stating that meeting deadlines is essential for national economic development. According to him, SEPNU’s success is integral to Nigeria’s vision of leveraging gas for industrialization and economic growth. Reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting indigenous energy companies, Ekpo pledged to address legislative and regulatory challenges that could hinder the efficient delivery of natural gas. In response, SEPNU’s Managing Director, Dotun Isiaka, assured the minister that the company has already engaged potential off-takers for its gas assets. He also sought government intervention in resolving regulatory bottlenecks to facilitate operations and achieve key project milestones. As Nigeria looks to fully harness its gas potential, the government and industry stakeholders are expected to collaborate closely to drive investment, infrastructure development, and a sustainable energy future.
