APM Terminals CEO Encourages Students to Pursue Maritime Careers.

Mr Frederik Klinke, the Country Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, has urged secondary school students to explore careers in the maritime sector. Speaking at a career seminar held at APM Terminals Apapa, Lagos, Klinke emphasized the promising opportunities within the industry and the importance of hard work and diligence.

During the seminar, part of the 2024 Children’s Day celebrations, Klinke highlighted APM Terminals‘ commitment to fostering the next generation of maritime professionals. He noted that the maritime sector is integral to the national economy and offers exciting career paths for young people.

Promoting Gender Diversity and Curiosity

Steen Knudsen, the Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, praised the students for their participation. He pointed out that despite the traditionally male-dominated nature of the maritime industry, APM Terminals employs a significant number of women. Knudsen encouraged students to remain curious, seize opportunities, and embrace new experiences.

Industry Insights and Educational Tours

The seminar featured various speakers who provided insights into the maritime industry. Olaitan Williams, President of the Ocean Ambassadors Foundation (OAF), commended APM Terminals for their support and highlighted Nigeria’s vast coastline, which has the potential to create millions of jobs. She urged students to dream big and consider their future roles in the industry.

Logistics expert Dr. Ibrahim Adepoju discussed the Cabotage Act and the Local Content Act, explaining how these laws open up career and investment opportunities in areas such as maritime law, marine engineering, accounting, and insurance.

Achenyo Obaro from MitiMeth educated students on transforming water hyacinths into valuable products like dining wares, art decor, and fashion accessories. She shared that this initiative has reached over 150 communities in Nigeria, creating significant job opportunities.

Ship surveyor Albert Akerele also spoke, detailing the various facets of the maritime sector and the extensive career opportunities available.

The seminar concluded with a tour of the APM Terminals facility, where students observed container ships at berth and cargo handling operations. This hands-on experience was designed to provide a tangible understanding of the maritime industry’s workings.

The “Blue Talents School-to-Sea Program,” organized by Ocean Ambassadors Foundation and APM Terminals Apapa, successfully engaged students from various secondary schools in Lagos, inspiring them to consider maritime careers. The event underscored the importance of fostering the next generation of professionals who will drive the maritime sector’s growth and efficiency.
