208-Carat Diamond Extracted From Lulo Mine in Angola
The Lucapa Diamond Company has reported the recovery of a 208-carat Type II diamond from the Lulo mine in the eastern Lunda Norte Province of Angola. This stone was extracted from block 31 and is the 39th diamond over 100 carats to be found at the Lulo mine. It is the second large diamond discovered in October, following the recovery of a 123-carat Type IIa diamond from block 19.
The Lulo mine covers 3,000 cubic meters and employs 630 people, with an estimated investment of $38 million since 2018.
The mine has been in operation since 2010 and has shown high potential in terms of both quality and quantity, achieving the highest value per carat globally in its first year of operation at $2,985. Lulo is also the mine where the largest diamond ever found in Angola was extracted, a 404.2-carat gem that sold for $16 million in 2016 and was valued at $34 million after being polished and turned into jewelry.
